"We always need money, but this time of year from now through the end of the year is our broke time, so we definitely have a need," Fornash said.
On Aug. 28, the fourth annual Black Dog Blues 'n' BBQ fundraiser will be held at The Office Lounge in Homewood Hills Shopping Center, 2455 Jefferson Road in Athens.
The event runs from 4 to 9 p.m. and features barbecue from Nadine's, along with live blues music by the Short Bus All-Stars Band. There is no cover charge, and door prizes will be awarded.
Fornash said shelter workers will bring animals to the event for possible adoption, and she expects a raffle will be held.
"We're trying to get enough donations to keep us going and to build the cat room, but that comes second to keeping the lights on," she said. A cat room is planned so cats can have open space to roam rather than stay in cages.
